Area Code and LATA Maps

LATA stands for Local Access Transport Area

LATAs were introduced with the break-up of
   the Bell System
The LATA boundary delineates the point where
your call is handed off from your local carrier
   to your long-distance company
With the Telecom Act of 1996, some customers
can now have one company handle their local,
   Intra-LATA long-distance and Inter-LATA
   long distance calls.
